This workshop is designed to contribute to the conference theme of ‘Recentering open: Critical and global perspectives’ by exploring the intersection of ‘open’ and ‘innovation’ agendas in universities.

While the work of Conole (2013) and Hegarty (2015) acknowledge innovation as a principle of open educational practice (OEP) and an attribute of open pedagogy, respectively, these agendas are often managed by different units within an institution, and often employ different rhetoric when communicating with stakeholders. This was recently reflected in Koseoglu and Bozkurt’s (2018, p. 11) review of the literature on OEP, where lexical analysis of titles and abstracts resulted in the development of a thematic map, which completely omitted the concept of ‘innovation’ in open.

This calls for greater interrogation of both the innovation and open agendas in the higher education (HE) sector, where (a) we find aspects of these agendas that can potentially intersect; (b) identify those elements or attributes of innovation that can contribute to leveraging the range of ‘opens’ within the open ecosystem; and (c) ultimately, gain greater traction in universities worldwide.

The CoAction Learning Lab (CALL 2018) project founded by Penn State University consists of 19 universities and colleges as contributing partners representing institutions from four continents including North America, Australia, Asia, and Europe. This collaboratory of 19 university teams, each include at least one student, learning facilitator, and technology leader to ensure diverse viewpoints, promote empathy between the various stakeholders that comprise the higher education ecosystem, and make it easier to diffuse findings at the institutional level. To date, the CALL collaboratory has established a set of six core values to underpin the development of an open online repository of resources designed to advance technology innovation at the intersection of pedagogy, implementation, and learner engagement. These include innovation culture and leadership, digital fluency, effective digital pedagogies, student-centred learning, inclusivity and access, and communities and partnerships.

These core values will be used as a framework for exploring the intersection of open and innovation agendas in universities. A structured workshop design will help draw upon the vision, mission and operationalisation of both, and provide a space where we can harness the affordances for mutual benefit.

This workshop is targeted to meet the needs of academic and professional staff in universities who are responsible for (or contribute to) either open education and/or innovation initiatives in their institution, as well as HE leaders/managers who wish to maximise their institutions investment in both open education and innovation agendas. It’s time for us to explore what happens when innovation and open collide!

WORKSHOP FORMAT

Workshop groups: 45 mins (participants divide into 3 groups, each group exploring 2 of the six CALL values)

OUTCOMES
Participants will:
* Engage with two of the six core values within the context of innovation and open agendas, both within their own institution and broadly across the HE sector
* Identify innovative approaches (ideas, strategies, examples) to designing open in HE that address the core values
* Build cross-institutional networks and global collaborative partnerships
* Demonstrate how active involvement with CALL could assist their institution in engaging in the open ecosystem
* Contribute to an open resource that informs a vision for integrating innovation and open praxis in HE

PROMOTION/SHARING OF OUTPUTS
The co-authors will use the hashtags #oer19 #oer #oep #openeducation #highereducation to generate interest in the broader higher education, innovation and open education communities to attend as virtual participants. Participants attending this workshop will also be encouraged to use these hashtags to share ideas, issues raised in and reported on during the workshop. The presenters/facilitators will advertise the event and openly share all output on the CSU uImagine and CoAction Learning Lab websites/blogs.
