DESCRIPTION:Room: G009\nTrack: Critical literacies\nSession Description\nVirtually Connecting sessions are open\, live-streamed and recorded events aimed at connecting those who are physically on site in a conference with those who are unable to be present. The manifesto for the VC organisation is available here http://virtuallyconnecting.org/virtually-connecting-manifesto/ \nThis session would use on site buddies and virtual buddies in order to provide space to critically engage with the idea of presence and academic practice. We work in the open. We would like to explore how technology use impacts upon disciplinary evolution. Virtual Exchange is an emerging\, interdisciplinary activity informed by research from the field of computer-mediated communication\, itself a field of practice borne from CALL: computer assisted language learning. How do we ensure that the use of technology for interaction in virtual exchange does not just reinforce the existing academic status quo and allows instead new voices to engage and shape the development of our disciplines?  How do we support the development of critical digital literacies as part of our practice? How can we pay attention to inclusivity and accessibility in our open educational practice? How can we ensure that virtual exchange is a force for the public good and supports social justice? \n\n\nSession content\nVC sessions are informal 30 minute conversations which are not pre-planned.
